What is Options Trading?

An option is simply granting someone the right to buy or sell something in the future. In the case of Dow index futures options, when someone buys a Dow call option they are buying the right to purchase that underlying Dow future at a specific price, known as the “strike price,” at a future point in time, known as the “expiration date.” When an investor buys a put, they are essentially selling the market; a call essentially buys the market. Likewise, selling a put essentially buys the market; selling a call essentially sells the market.

In order to receive the opportunity to buy an option on this future, investors pay a “premium.” If the market does not reach the strike price of the option, then that option will expire worthless on the expiration date. If the market does reach the strike price of the option on the expiration date, then the investor will be assigned the underlying future at that strike price.

Advantages of Options Trading

Flexibility. Options can be used in a wide variety of strategies, from conservative to high-risk, and can be tailored to more expectations than simply “the stock will go up” or “the stock will go down.”

Leverage. An investor can gain leverage in a stock without committing to a trade.

Limited Risk. Risk is limited to the option premium (except when writing options for a security that is not already owned).

Hedging. Options allow investors to protect their positions against price fluctuations when it is not desirable to alter the underlying positon.

Disadvantages of Options Trading

Costs. The costs of trading options (including both commissions and the bid/ask spread) is significantly higher on a percentage basis than trading the underlying stock, and these costs can drastically eat into any profits.

Liquidity. With the vast array of different strike prices available, some will suffer from very low liquidity making trading difficult.

Complexity. Options are very complex and require a great deal of observation and maintenance.

Time decay. The time-sensitive nature of options leads to the result that most options expire worthless. This only applies to those traders that purchase options – those selling collect the premium but with:

Unlimited Risk. Some option positions, such as writing uncovered options, are accompanied by unlimited risk.

Overall Options present a good opportunity to formulate plans which can take advantage of volatility in underlying markets as well as price direction. However for most traders the disadvantages are significant and online futures trading is usually a better option.

Many believe that our current high oil prices are in part a result of bad environmental law that was lobbied in through environmental activists. Those who believe our current situation is cause from environmentalism say that the environmentalists are so often hypocritical. On one hand they attack EIRs and projects then they complain about the consequences of their linear thinking. It’s just amazing they say.

Indeed, no one can deny that everybody has to breath the air and drink the water, so I doubt there are many who believe pollution is best. Having sat on committees for hours, sat in planning commissions for multiple nights on end, having written NPDES BMPs and permits, and having assisted with ride share programs and AQMD groups to come up with viable and reasonable environmental decisions; I cannot say that environmentalists are as genuine as they purport to be.

It’s just obvious to me that the FRINGE environmentalists have done more to prevent America from reaching her full potential than any other single group, in any other civilization in the History of Mankind! Of course, this is merely my opinion based on years of experience, vast amounts of research and a tremendous intake of real observation.

Does this mean I am right and the environmentalists are wrong? Well, yes, but to their credit occasionally, very rarely they do come up with interesting solutions and worthy points of contention. Thus, we might wish to keep a line open for them, but we also ought to take everything they say, every report they make and every stance they take; with a grain of salt.

With all the negative connotations attached to the word “stress”, it is certainly hard to see it in a positive light. However, not all stress is bad. Some amount of stress is necessary to lead a normal life and for some people, it is a reminder that makes them do their best.

An important lesson to be learned here is that stress can be controlled and made to work FOR you, instead of AGAINST you. There are a number of people for whom stress is as much a part of life as air, water and food but they are not moved by it. These people manage their stress in such a way that it helps boost their performance. Apparently, they kind of lack all the symptoms of stress. And these are exactly the people must look for.

These people can be called Natural Stress Managers. They have stress management techniques down to an art. The good part is that you can learn and copy from them. Observe and notice around you – which person keeps his or her cool when in a jam-packed bus? Which person has a go-easy, no-panic attitude even in stressful situations? Which person around you seems to be the happiest in the world with no tensions whatsoever? Those people are the natural stress managers whom you can learn a lot from.

We humans learn best by example and observation. After you’ve identified these people, observe them. See what they do and also, see what they do DIFFERENTLY. How is your behavior and their behavior different in the same situation both are facing? What is it that makes them keep cool and calm while others around them are losing temper on small things?

When you do that, you’ll observe some key characteristics common to all of them. They do not panic, they are generally optimistic, they NEVER think or react negatively, they never “create a scene” in a public situation and they never let their anger take over their senses. This is important. These are the exact characteristics you need to copy to reduce stress easily. Copy them and make them a habit. There is no better way than this to learn stress management.

If you have to, ASK them. Let them know you are looking for stress relievers and tell them how calm they look to you. Everyone likes heart-felt flattery. Then ask them if they’re willing to help you reduce stress. And when they tell you how to, be a good listener and take mental notes of every word they speak and every technique they tell you about. Then go home and practice them daily. You will your stress go away within days and you’ll be managing stress like a pro!

Global Talent Movement

Early Humans were nomads, wandering the earth. As they found an ideal place as defined by alluvial soil, abundant supply of fresh water and balmy weather, they started to settle down. Initial large agrarian society emerged out in places like Mesopotamia and Indus Valley. As more people settled, it led to imbalanced Supply and Demand for the basic needs. Limited resources led to wars which in turn led to creation of boundaries and a military to manage who can come and stay. As the economies of the countries were small initially, the countries restricted movement of people.

Industrial revolution led to rise in productivity. We began to see first signs of movement of labor in form of urbanization. But still the labor movement was restricted to the confines of the country border. Information revolution with the rise of computing power, networking etc. led to the need for large number of skilled workers. ‘Dot com’ phenomenon and Y2K issues in late 1990s suddenly spiked the demand for skilled labor and developed countries opened the flood gates for temporary immigration of skilled labor.

Now, integration of global labor pool caused by accelerated technological trends has started to create more division of labor leading to more specialization. Global organizations are now in need of highly skilled or talented workers. Rising wealth in Asian countries, demographic shifts (graying of workers in developed world) and lowering of barriers to set up a ‘for profit’ enterprise worldwide (both due to technology and government policies in the countries world wide), will only increase the competition for ‘Talented’ labor. Interesting observation in Economist in the article titled ‘World in Flux’, talks how the “market for talented people is increasingly fierce – and global”. Here are some of the latest statistics and trends from the article.

* Currently 3% of the world population lives in foreign countries

* In Europe Schengen area – which allows passport-free movement of labor is being expanded to include more countries in Eastern Europe

* Serious debate currently in Europe on how to attract more skilled foreign workers

* Britain is going to implement “Point system” similar to Australia, New Zealand and Canada to attract young skilled foreign workers

* Temporary workers program is being packaged as “circular migration” in the rich countries to make it more palatable for the voters

* Booming Asia is attracting highly skilled Westerners (I think this trend will only accelerate and create a brain drain in the developed countries for the first time!)

According to the article “it will become normal for well educated to spend some part of the year in some one else’s country”. The question I have is: Are we becoming nomadic again? In some sense globalization is slowly erasing the country boundaries. There is always the risk of backlash due to terrorism and jingoism. But in the long run I believe economic incentives for globalization far outweigh the risks associated with it and the talented people will be on the move!

Many folks will tell you that they are fighting for justice and when you ask them about it and find out a little bit of their history you will find that they were discriminated against at some point in their life and they want to make sure it never happens to anyone else again. They tell us that this is their inspiration, but I’d like to explain some of my life experience and observation of such folks.

You see, those who would be willing to inflict the most pain on other are generally those who have had the most pain (physical or emotional inflicted upon them). Would you like some examples? What about Adolph Hitler who even titled his book; “My Struggle” and later inflicted torture and pain on entire groups of society and later caused the worst World War in History?

Would you like a more contemporary example? Sure, well there are millions of bloggers and folks in online forums who are constantly attacking and lashing out, they are from groups who perceive to have been victimized by discrimination. They then rise up and call for justice, all the while doing injustice with harsh words to others online, often shouting others down and calling them unbelievable things.

You see, if you use discrimination as your inspiration or as a means to justify your actions then the real problem in the world is not that which you attack, but rather it is inside of you and how you now view the world. You are viewing the world through the eyes of a damaged soul, one that needs to be made hole, but you cannot get that done until you forgive others and admit your own revenge motivations and evil intentions.

Sorry to be the one to break this news to you, but don’t shoot the messenger Mr. and Mrs. Obama.
